Contractor directory
This page lists construction companies and contractors in Ethiopia. It covers large general contractors that build roads, towers and factories, and smaller firms that build villas and do finishing works. Real.et curates the list. It is not an official registry, and a place on it is not an endorsement.
Ethiopia licenses contractors by category and grade: GC means general contractor, BC means building contractor, and the grades run from 1 to 10. Grade 1 is the top grade, a higher grade lets a contractor take on larger projects, and the Ethiopian Construction Authority keeps the register of licensed contractors.
To build a house, start with approved drawings from an architect and a bill of quantities. The bill of quantities lists each item of work with its quantity, so you can compare quotes from several contractors line by line. Sign a written contract with the price, the scope, the timeline and a payment schedule. Pay in stages as the work reaches agreed points, such as the foundation, the frame and the roof, and hold back a part until the handover. Hire a site supervisor or a consulting engineer to check the work before each payment.
Before you hire, ask each company for its license, its grade and finished projects that you can visit.

GC-1 means a grade 1 general contractor. GC is the general contractor category and 1 is the top grade. BC-1 means a grade 1 building contractor. The grade sets the size of the projects a contractor may take on, so a grade 1 firm can bid for the largest projects.
Ask the company for its contractor license certificate and its trade license. Check that the company name, the category and the grade match what the company tells you, and that the dates are current. The Ethiopian Construction Authority keeps the register of licensed contractors, so you can confirm a license there. Real.et does not verify licenses. The grades on this page are what each company publishes.
The cost depends on the design, the size, the site and the finishing level, and material prices change every week. Ask your architect or engineer for a bill of quantities and ask at least three contractors to price it. Our guide to construction material prices in Ethiopia lists recent prices for cement, rebar, blocks and roofing and what it costs to build per square metre.
Pay in stages, not all at once. Tie each payment to a stage of the work in the contract, such as the foundation, the frame, the roof and the finishing. Pay only after your supervisor checks each stage, keep a part until the handover, and get a receipt for every payment.
No. It is a directory, not a ranking. Companies with a full profile come first in the list, then the rest in alphabetical order. Companies that publish a license grade or name their projects are in the large general contractors section.
