Generator prices in Ethiopia (2026): diesel and petrol, by kW and kVA

Power cuts are part of life in many Ethiopian homes, so a generator is often the first thing a new owner or tenant asks about. This guide covers generator prices in Ethiopia: small silent diesel units for homes, portable petrol units, large standby sets and rental rates. It also explains fuel costs, how to size a generator and where to buy one in Addis Ababa.

Every price here is a seller's published asking price on the date shown. Each row names the seller, the page and the date. We do not take prices from marketplace listings and we do not estimate. Where no seller publishes a price, we say so. Prices change with the exchange rate, so ask for a fresh quote before you pay.

Diesel generator prices for homes

Yetim Tools in Addis Ababa publishes a full price list for the LUTIAN silent diesel range on its TikTok account. These are small, enclosed units for homes, shops and offices. The post offers free delivery.

The list shows how price grows with size. The jump from 3.3 kW to 5 kW is the largest step, at ETB 105,000. Above 5 kW, each extra kilowatt adds ETB 20,000 to 25,000.

What a 5 kVA generator means

Sellers quote some generators in kW and others in kVA. kVA is the total output. kW is the part that does useful work. Most generator makers rate their sets at a power factor of 0.8, so a 5 kVA generator gives about 4 kW. When you search for a 5kVA generator price, compare it with the 3.3 kW and 5 kW rows above, and ask the seller for the kW rating at the same time.

Petrol generator prices

No seller in our review publishes a current price for a portable petrol generator on its own page. Many tool shops in Addis Ababa show petrol units in TikTok videos, but they give the price only inside the video or by phone. We do not copy a price we cannot read from the seller's own text.

For context, Addis Fortune reported shop prices for small petrol generators in Piassa during the power rationing of May 2019. These are old prices, before the birr began to float in 2024. They show how fast prices move when demand jumps, not what you pay today.

The same article notes that households prefer petrol generators because they are quieter, while businesses buy diesel units for more power.

Large diesel standby generators

No seller in our review publishes a price for a standby set of 20 kVA or more. Dealers sell these on quote, because the price depends on the engine brand, the canopy, the control panel and installation. Two Addis Ababa dealers that advertise this class on their own accounts:

• Yuchai generator dealer, Wello Sefer. Advertises Yuchai sets from 20 kVA to 1,250 kVA.
• Zeeleons, Rwanda Embassy street. Advertises Perkins diesel sets in all sizes.

Ask each dealer for the prime and standby rating, the engine and alternator brands, and whether the quote includes an automatic transfer switch.

Generator rental rates

If you need power for a short time, for example during construction, renting can cost less than buying. Conmart publishes reference rental rates taken from the Addis Ababa City Administration construction bureau price list for the fourth quarter of 2018 E.C.

These are reference rates for public works, not a rental company's quote. Private rental firms in Addis Ababa, such as Psy Power Rentals, quote per job.

Fuel cost

The purchase price is only the start. Fuel is the largest running cost. Stockmarket.et reported these retail prices, effective from 23 April 2026:

• Petrol (gasoline): ETB 167.50 per litre.
• Diesel (white diesel): ETB 180.46 per litre.

To work out your daily cost, find the fuel use in litres per hour on the spec sheet, then multiply by the hours you run it and the fuel price. For example, if a generator burns 1 litre of diesel an hour and runs 4 hours a day, fuel costs about ETB 722 a day. Ask the seller for fuel use at half load, because that is how most homes run a generator.

What drives generator prices

Import cost and the exchange rate

Almost all generators sold in Ethiopia are imported. The landed price includes the product cost in foreign currency, freight, duty and VAT. When the birr weakens, shops reprice their stock. This is why a price from last year is often far below today's price.

Brand and engine

Dealers in Addis Ababa advertise engine brands such as Perkins and Yuchai. A known engine brand makes parts and mechanics easier to find. Ask which engine and alternator the set uses, not only the brand on the canopy.

Silent or open frame

A silent unit has an enclosure that cuts noise. It usually costs more than an open frame unit of the same size, but it suits an apartment block or a shared compound.

Warranty and service

A dealer with a workshop, spare parts and a written warranty usually charges more. For a standby set that runs often, this support is worth paying for.

How to size a generator for your home

Add up the watts of everything you want to run at the same time. Then add room for motors, which draw two to three times their rated power for a moment when they start. Typical ratings are on each appliance label. Some common examples:

• LED bulb: about 10 W each.
• TV and Wi-Fi router: about 100 W together.
• Fridge: about 150 W running, with a much higher start.
• Laptop: about 60 W.
• Water pump: 370 W to 750 W, with a high start.
• Electric kettle or iron: 1,000 W to 2,000 W.
• Electric mitad for injera: often more than 2,000 W.

A small apartment that wants lights, TV, router, fridge and phone charging needs about 1 to 2 kW. A house with a water pump, more lights and a washing machine needs 3 to 5 kW. If you want to bake injera or run an electric stove during a power cut, plan for 5 kW or more.

Where to buy a generator in Addis Ababa

• Piassa. The hardware market around the Old Post Office has long been a centre for generator shops.
• Merkato. Generator sellers such as Mesfin Generator post their stock from Merkato.
• Wello Sefer and Rwanda Embassy street. Dealers for large diesel standby sets.

Many shops also sell through TikTok, Telegram and Facebook. Visit the shop before you pay a deposit, and check the unit runs under load.

Checklist before you pay

• Ask for the rating in kW, not only kVA.
• Ask whether the price includes VAT, delivery and installation.
• Run the generator in the shop with a real load, such as a kettle.
• Ask for the fuel use per hour and the tank size.
• Ask about the warranty, spare parts and who services it.
• Get a receipt with the model, serial number and price.

Safety

Never run a generator inside a house, a garage or a closed balcony. The exhaust contains carbon monoxide, which kills without warning. Place it outside, away from windows.
