Solar panel prices in Ethiopia (2026): panels, home systems and solar water heaters

By Real.et Editorial · Updated November 6, 2026 · 7 min read

Solar is now a common answer to power cuts in Addis Ababa. A small kit keeps the lights, the TV and the Wi-Fi on. A larger system with a lithium battery can run a whole house. This guide covers solar panel prices in Ethiopia, complete solar system prices, inverters and batteries, and solar water heaters. It then explains how to size a system and where to buy one.

Every price here is a seller's published asking price on the date shown. Each row names the seller, the page and the date. We do not take prices from marketplace listings and we do not estimate. Where no seller publishes a price, we say so. Most solar equipment is imported, so prices follow the exchange rate. Ask for a fresh quote before you pay.

Solar panel prices by watt

Green Sun Tech publishes panel prices on its TikTok account. The list covers small monocrystalline panels and offers an extra discount on orders of more than ten panels.

Every size in this list works out to ETB 36 per watt. The post is about a year old, so check the price before you order.

Home systems now use larger panels of 600 W to 715 W. No seller in our review publishes a price for one of these panels on its own. They come inside complete packages, below.

Complete solar system prices

A complete system has three parts: panels, an inverter and a battery. Most sellers in Addis Ababa sell them as a package. G-Power sellers publish package prices on their TikTok accounts.

The two 11 kW options differ only by the nine panels. The difference is ETB 401,000 for 6,435 W of panels, or about ETB 62 per watt. That is about 1.7 times the per watt price of the small panels above. The two prices come from different sellers, different panel sizes and dates a year apart, so treat the gap as a guide, not a rule.

Solar system price in Ethiopia by size

The table gives three points on the price curve: a small backup kit under ETB 200,000, a large inverter and battery bank at about ETB 650,000, and a full 11 kW system with panels above ETB 1 million. Mid size systems of 3 kW to 6 kW are the most common for houses. We have not found a seller who publishes a full price for one in text. Ask two or three sellers for a quote on the same specification.

Inverter and battery prices

No seller in our review publishes a price for an inverter or a battery sold alone. Sellers bundle them in packages because the inverter and battery must match. When you compare quotes, ask for the price of each part:

  • Inverter. The brand, the size in kW, and whether it is hybrid. A hybrid inverter can charge the battery from both the grid and the panels.
  • Battery. The chemistry and the usable capacity in kWh. LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate) batteries cost more than lead acid but last many more cycles.
  • Panels. The brand, the watts per panel and the number of panels.

Solar water heater prices

A solar water heater warms water on the roof without electricity. Addisber, an online shop that sells from its own warehouse, lists three sizes. Prices include VAT.

A solar water heater replaces the electric shower heater or boiler, which is one of the biggest loads in a home. Ask whether the price includes the roof stand, plumbing and installation.

What drives solar prices

Imports and the exchange rate

Panels, inverters and lithium batteries are mostly imported. The price you pay includes the foreign price, freight, duty, VAT and the seller's margin. When the birr weakens, sellers raise prices on new stock.

Battery chemistry and size

The battery is often the most expensive part of a system. Lithium batteries cost more than lead acid but last longer and can be discharged deeper. A bigger battery gives more hours of backup and costs more.

Brand

Sellers in Addis Ababa name brands such as Jinko for panels and SRNE for inverters. A named brand with a model number lets you check the spec sheet and find parts later. An unbranded product is harder to compare and harder to repair.

Warranty and installation

Some packages include installation and a warranty. Others are supply only. Ask in writing what the price covers, how long the warranty is, and who honours it.

How to size a solar system for your home

Start with the load. List what you want to run during a power cut, then add the watts. Typical examples:

  • Basic backup. LED lights, TV, Wi-Fi router and phone charging: about 200 W to 300 W. A 1 kW kit like the one above covers this.
  • Family apartment. Add a fridge and a laptop: about 500 W to 800 W at once, with more when the fridge starts. A 3 kW to 5 kW inverter is common.
  • House or villa. Add a water pump, a washing machine and more rooms. Plan for 5 kW to 11 kW.

Next, size the battery. Multiply the load in watts by the hours of backup you need. A 300 W load for 6 hours needs 1,800 Wh, or about 2 kWh of usable battery.

Last, size the panels. On a clear day in Addis Ababa, a panel yields roughly four to five times its rating in watt hours. Output drops in the kiremt rains from June to September. The sun must recharge the battery and run the daytime load, so add panels with that in mind.

Heavy heating loads, such as an electric mitad for injera, an electric stove or a water heater, need a large system. A solar water heater or a generator is often the better answer for those. See generator prices in Ethiopia to compare.

Where to buy solar in Addis Ababa

  • 22 Mazoria. Green Sun Tech has a shop in the Quality building.
  • Sengatera. Green Scene runs its TOLO showroom on the curve opposite the Ministry of Health.
  • Meskel Square and Lebu. Shops selling portable power stations and solar backup.
  • Online. Many sellers post packages on TikTok, Telegram and Facebook and deliver across Addis Ababa.

Visit the shop before you pay a deposit. Ask to see the inverter running and the battery label.

Checklist before you pay

  • Get the brand and model of the panels, inverter and battery in writing.
  • Ask for the usable battery capacity in kWh, not only amp hours.
  • Ask whether the price includes VAT, mounting, cables, installation and delivery.
  • Ask how long the warranty is for each part.
  • Check that your roof can take the panels. In a condominium, ask the association first. See our condominium guide.
  • Pay the balance only after the system runs.
